Who conducts Goizueta admissions interviews?

The large majority of our interviews are completed by members of the Full-Time Admissions Committee. Our committee members travel domestically and internationally and complete hundreds of interviews per year. We also have a very small group of recent MBA alumni who interview candidates on our behalf during our Super Saturdays. These alumni are fully trained on our processes, and we view their evaluations as on par with our own. Alumni do not interview for us internationally; we take great pride in the fact that we travel extensively to meet our international candidates in their home cities/countries.

Do you have any interview tips for Goizueta applicants?

Our interview process is designed to be conversational and enjoyable for the candidate. Yes-it is a formal interview, but we are looking to have a conversation about the candidate’s work experience and the specific inititatives that they have contributed to at work. We want to learn about their leadership skills, level of responsibility in their jobs, and get a sense of their outside interests. We also try to find out more about their interpersonal skills and how flexible they are so we can get a sense of how they may contribute to our program and how well they will work on a team. The vast majority of our interviews are done blind, i.e., we have not seen any part of the candidate’s file before the interview. Our blind interview process gives the interviewee a chance to shine. If an international applicant or anyone who has completed an application cannot come to Atlanta for an interview and we are considering them for admission, they will be offered the opportunity to interview over the telephone.

My advice to candidates is to be prepared to discuss their experiences and their goals post-MBA in a concise and articulate way. Candidates should be able to give specific examples about ways that they have demonstrated initiative in their work as well as how our program will benefit them and vice versa. A candidate is only as strong as their communication skills during an interview.

I recommend that candidates visit classes before their interview if possible. If they spend the day with our students, and on our campus, they will be prepared to talk about why Goizueta is a great fit for them. Another way to accomplish this is by attending or watching on webcast one of our Super Saturday programs.

How important is an applicant’s GMAT score?

The GMAT is an important component in our review of an applicant’s file. The GMAT is not a tool for weeding out candidates. It is a standardized test that effectively measures how a person will perform in the first year of the MBA program. We have found it particularly helpful in assessing a person’s quantitative skills and preparation for our program. A good test score, however, will not necessarily guarantee admission. To be admitted to our program, applicants must demonstrate leadership, strong work experience, and interpersonal skills through the interview. We suggest candidates take the GMAT again if they are not satisfied with their first score; we expect to see at least a 50% on the quantitative segment of the exam. We will evaluate the highest total score. It has been our experience that the biggest issue for many candidates is the quantitative part of the test. Candidates may not have had the quantitative background they need to give them the confidence to do well on the exam. We suggest studying GMAT preparatory material and/or taking Algebra or another math course to prepare for the test rather than going into it “cold”. Also, an applicant should plan to take the GMAT two times; in that way, they won’t have so much pressure to do well the first time.
